What is Emirates ID or Emirates Identity Card

An Emirates Id is the primary identification card in UAE. Main use of this card is to provide identity to all people living in the UAE. Moreover, It is a collection of data of every resident in the UAE, which a resident or expat must carry all the time. Also, The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC) issues this card with the help of the Emirates Identification Authority (EIDA). You can locate EIDA Branches in our latest Article.

Each Emirates ID card contains a unique 15-digit identity number and an electronic chip that stores all the information about you, such as your photo, name, father’s name, date of birth, etc. 

So, if you are planning to come and work in any of the seven states of UAE, you should first have to get an Emirates ID. Also you can use Emirates ID for transactions, paying bills, paying fines, registering vehicles, and much more.

Expiration and Validity of Emirates ID

The expiration date of your UAE ID depends on the validity of your resident visa. Therefore, If your visa is valid for two years, your identity will only be valid for two years.

However, It is essential to renew your ID card temporarily (maximum within 30 days of expiration). Also, There will be a 20 AED penalty for each day of overstay. But you have a slight chance of forgetting about it: each time your resident visa is renewed or reissued, the ICA reminds you to apply for a new card via SMS. You can also apply for a new one if your Emirates ID is lost

Validity Period of Emirates ID

Emirates ID validation depends upon your origin of residency and your family tree:

(1)- Firstly, If you are a UAE nationalist, Emirates ID will be valid from 5 to 10 years.

(2)- Secondly, For GCC nationalists, the Emirates ID will be valid up to 5 years.

(3)- Finally, For expatriates, the Emirates ID valid till the expiry of Visa Validity as it is linked to the residency of Visa Validity.

How to Apply for a new ID

You can get your Emirates ID with three methods:

(1)- Firstly, You can go to the ICA website and submit an online application for a new Emirates ID.

(2)- You can also ask your sponsor to provide you an Emirates ID card.

(3)- Lastly, you can go to an Authorized Typing Centers and submit an application from there.

How to get Emirates ID Online?

Getting an EMIRATES ID is difficult if you have to visit the required offices and pay extra dues. However, you can get your Emirates id without any hustle and struggle by submitting an online application on the ICA website and getting your ID in a short time.

Moreover, The process of getting an Emirates ID online is briefly described below:

  1. Register yourself at ICA Website
  2. Submit Application and Pay fees
  3. Submit Required Documents
  4. Application Fees
  5. Biometrics
  6. Collect your Emirates ID from local Post Office

Registering yourself at ICA Website

Make an account on the ICA platform and log in to your account by putting your email in user name and password in the required field.


Submitting your application at ICA Website

Once you made your account on the ICA website, log in to your account and click on “Apply for a new ID card.” Once you did that, a new application page will open. Now, Enter all the required details carefully and correctly, and then submit your application. Information required is:

(1)- Name of the applicant

(2)- Address of the applicant

(3)- Passport number of the applicant

Submit all the required Documents

For any legal work, an applicant must have some official documents that they are taking from you through the following protocol, and you can go through this procedure through all these documents.

Otherwise, you will not get your UAE Identity Card, and your application will not be able to submit.

Following documents are required to attach with the online application.

Documents for UAE Nationals:

(1)- UAE family book

(2)- Certificate of social security

(3)- Original passport (If applicable)

(4)- Medical certificate for older people or some special needs people

(5)- Birth certificate for the boys and girls below 15 years

Documents for UAE Expats:

(1)- Scanned Passport

(2)- Scanned Visa page

(3)- Proof of residency: This may include a valid employment certificate, real estate lease, or ownership contract. You can also use a commercial license, school registration certificate, certificate of dependency, valid marriage contract, or an employment card (GCC Citizen);

(4)- A 35×45 mm passport photo with a white background. Make sure it is only three months old. Not more than three months.

NOTE: “Kindly check the following things before submitting your application:

  • The photo must be in color
  • 35×45 mm of size
  • The photo has an even white background
  • Head height is 70-80% of the photo

In case your photo is rejected, you will get a 100% refund. If you apply for the first time, your image will be taken and the photo taken along with the fingerprints.

However, if you want to change it later, you can submit a passport-sized photo with your application.”

Pay Application Fees

Once you submit your online application with all the documents needed, pay the required fees at the nearest Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC).

Once you paid the required fees, keep the original receipt with you. Here is the Fees Breakdown for you

  • 100 AED for 1 year
  • 270 AED for 2 years
  • 370 AED for 3 years


After submitting the application and paying the required fees, you will receive an SMS on your given phone number informing you of the next steps. This message will mention an EIDA branch you should visit.

Here, you will need to provide your data, employer information, biometrics (photo, fingerprints). Once your biometrics is updated, your application will be online, and you will get your Emirates ID in under seven working days.

Collecting your Emirates ID

After doing all the procedures, you will receive a tracking number that will allow you to track your Emirates ID application status on the EIDA website. Upon completion, your ID card will be sent to the local post office near to you.

You will receive an update SMS from Emirates Post inviting you to visit your local post office and get your UAE ID. Make sure you keep your passport and UAE ID form with you.

Note: “You should have to collect your Emirates ID under 90 Days from the local post office. Otherwise, it will be sent back or discarded.”
